Combating Mildew With Pressure Washing

Mildew can be a constant struggle to control. As a professional paint advisor and pressure washing pro, I’m often asked “Is there something I can put on my bricks, pavers, siding, or driveway that will prevent this unsightly mildew from returning?

In paint, maybe. But for all of the rest of those surfaces, no. However, on pavers, bricks, and concrete – there are sealers that can be applied that will make it easier to clean these surfaces when mildew does return.

Periodic maintenance cleanings will make it less noticeable and make it easier to clean. Allowing mildew to continue to grow will make it more difficult to clean.

Mildew manifests itself in many ways. It looks like black dirt on concrete surfaces. It’s green or black on painted surfaces. It’s shades of green when it appears on windows.

Don’t forget the Jomax. This is our favorite product to use. We also use 30 second outdoor cleaner. The common ingredient used to kill the mildew is bleach. With Jomax, you add bleach. 30 Second outdoor cleaner already contains bleach.

When pressure washing to combat mildew, always remember that these products will be a big help and actually do a lot of the hard work for you when you use them prior to pressure washing mildew off of surfaces.

It’s always important to be mindful of the amount of pressure being used. Concrete and brick surfaces can take harder pressures. Building materials for siding, such as Hardie board, vinyl siding, stucco, wood, and other surfaces should only be pressure washed with lower pressures or soft washing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I apply sealers to pavers and bricks for easier cleaning?

A: While sealers don’t prevent mildew, they do make cleaning easier. Reapplying them every few years can maintain their effectiveness.

Q: Can mildew cause damage to my outdoor surfaces?

A: Yes, if left untreated, mildew can cause wear and staining, especially on porous surfaces like concrete and brick.

Q: Is it safe to use bleach-based products on all outdoor surfaces?

A: Bleach based products are effective and can be safe when used properly. However, care should be taken with certain materials such as vinyl siding, painted surfaces, and glass. Additionally, always be mindful of nearby vegetation, keep it well watered! Remember to use good personal protection equipment such as goggles too.
